Actor Mandy Patinkin has been selected as the inaugural honorary team captain for USA Fencing ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games. The distinction marks a notable return to the sport for Patinkin, who famously trained in fencing techniques for his iconic role in the 1987 film “The Princess Bride,” nearly four decades ago.
In his new role, Patinkin will make select appearances at USA Fencing events and support the team’s preparations for the home Games. His appointment comes as part of the organization’s broader Ambassador Program, developed in collaboration with the International Fencing Federation and World Para Fencing, which aims to introduce new audiences to the sport.
Patinkin expressed deep respect for the discipline and mental rigor required by competitive fencing, describing it as both an art form and a form of meditation. He acknowledged that while he trained with Olympic coaches for his film work, competitive fencers represent the true practitioners of the sport.
