Magenta Light Studios has secured distribution rights for “The King of the Internet,” a Brazilian crime drama directed by Fabrício Bittar, across the United States and Canada. The film draws inspiration from the real-life case of Daniel Nascimento, a teenage hacker whose criminal activities made him one of Brazil’s most infamous cybercriminals. Currently positioned as a contender for Brazil’s official Oscar submission in the Best International Feature Film category, the movie is scheduled for theatrical release in North America later this year.
Set during the early emergence of internet culture in Brazil, the film weaves together elements of crime storytelling with a coming-of-age narrative. It chronicles Nascimento’s journey from his initial interest in computers to his transformation into a highly skilled hacker involved in sophisticated criminal operations. As his technical abilities unlock access to wealth and power, he becomes entangled in organized cybercrime before Brazilian Federal Police ultimately shut down his operation when he was still a teenager.
João Guilherme leads the cast as Nascimento, with Marcelo Serrado among the supporting performers. The screenplay was written by Bittar alongside Vinícius Perez. Magenta Light Studios CEO Bob Yari emphasized the film’s appeal, calling it a compelling story about both the technological landscape of early internet Brazil and the psychology of a young person suddenly wielding unprecedented power and resources.
