During the Los Angeles murder-for-hire trial of Grammy-winning rapper Lil Durk, jurors were presented with an unreleased music video titled “Redman” that prosecutors argue demonstrates a motive for revenge. The video, filmed in January 2021, depicts the artist responding to news coverage of his close friend King Von’s fatal shooting in Atlanta the previous year. In the footage, Durk appears to chase and shoot an actor whom prosecutors claim represents rival rapper Quando Rondo.
The defense team took a sharply different stance on the video’s significance. Attorney Brian Steel characterized it as artistic expression from a grieving musician, describing his client as a poet who uses music to paint vivid imagery. Steel emphasized that the video was professionally produced using a toy weapon and remained unreleased, suggesting it should not be interpreted as evidence of criminal intent.
Prosecutors allege that Durk’s desire for revenge intensified over time, ultimately leading him to allegedly hire individuals to locate and kill Quando Rondo in August 2022. According to their account, the shooting resulted in the death of Rondo’s cousin, though Rondo himself survived. The defense countered by suggesting that grief from King Von’s death may have influenced Durk’s creative output without indicating involvement in the alleged shooting.
The 33-year-old artist has pleaded not guilty to charges including conspiracy, stalking resulting in death, and murder for hire. His legal team maintains he had no connection to the Los Angeles incident.
