Stop-motion animation studio LAIKA has unveiled a trailer for its upcoming film “Wildwood,” showcasing visually impressive sequences that blend fantasy storytelling with technical artistry. The project represents a collaboration between director Travis Knight and Colin Meloy, frontman of indie band The Decemberists, who wrote the source material.
The narrative centers on Prue McKeel, a determined young protagonist voiced by Peyton Elizabeth Lee, who ventures into an enchanted woodland near Portland, Oregon to rescue her abducted brother. The mysterious forest, known as the Impassable Wilderness, draws comparisons to Jim Henson’s “Labyrinth” for its fantastical setting and adventure-focused plot structure. The world contains an array of animated characters, including a commanding golden eagle named the General and a complex antagonist named Alexandra, portrayed vocally by Carey Mulligan.
The trailer demonstrates elaborate stop-motion sequences featuring sprawling landscapes, fantastical creatures, and dynamic action sequences. An ensemble voice cast including Jacob Tremblay, Tom Waits, Awkwafina, and Mahershala Ali contribute to the production. The film is scheduled for theatrical release in October.
