Director Kurosawa Kiyoshi’s latest film “The Samurai and the Prisoner” has secured international distribution agreements across numerous markets following its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. The sales agent Charades has successfully brokered deals with distributors spanning Europe, Asia, and other regions, demonstrating strong global interest in the production.
The film has already achieved notable commercial success in its home market. In Japan, where Shochiku handles distribution, the film surpassed 1.1 billion yen at the box office, drawing approximately 800,000 ticket holders. Meanwhile, releases in North America through Janus Films have generated around $800,000 in revenue.
Based on a Naoki Prize-winning novel by Yonezawa Honobu, the historical drama is set during Japan’s Sengoku period and follows a warlord who defies the powerful Oda Nobunaga, only to face siege within his own castle. The story explores themes of power and constraint as the protagonist forms an unexpected alliance with a strategist imprisoned in his dungeons.
Distributors acquiring rights include Blue Finch Film in the United Kingdom, I Wonder Pictures in Italy, and multiple other companies across France, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, and several Asian territories. The expansive distribution network reflects confidence in the film’s appeal to international audiences.
