Director Kogonada’s latest film “Zi” will premiere in Asia at the Busan International Film Festival, competing in the Icons section. The film has secured Korean distribution through Atnine Film, marking an expansion of the studio’s commitment to the director’s work following a successful re-release of his earlier feature “Columbus” in the region.
Filmed across three weeks in Hong Kong, “Zi” features Michelle Mao, Haley Lu Richardson, and Jin Ha in a narrative about three individuals whose lives intersect during a single evening that transcends time. The plot centers on a woman who encounters visions of her future self and meets a stranger whose presence fundamentally alters the trajectory of her night and potentially her entire future.
Isabelle Hyejin Park, director of acquisitions at Atnine Film, expressed enthusiasm about bringing the project to Korean viewers, noting the film maintains the emotional depth characteristic of Kogonada’s previous work while exploring fresh creative territory. The acquisition follows Parallax Films’ earlier deal to handle international sales outside North America, arranged during the Shanghai International Film Festival.
“Zi” previously screened at the Sundance Film Festival and at MoMI’s First Look Film Festival in New York. The Busan premiere will represent the film’s initial presentation to Asian audiences.
