A judge has ordered a competency evaluation for Brady Ebert, the former guitarist of the Baltimore rock band Turnstile, who faces life in prison if convicted of attempted first-degree murder. Ebert is accused of deliberately driving his car into William Yates, the father of Turnstile singer Brendan Yates, causing lower body injuries. The competency assessment must be completed before trial proceedings can begin.
During court proceedings, Ebert contested the evaluation requirement and maintains his innocence, claiming the allegations constitute self-defense and that police reports are fabricated. His attorney, Mark Sobel, initiated the competency evaluation despite Ebert’s objections, citing significant concerns about his mental fitness. Ebert has since expressed plans to dismiss Sobel, alleging the lawyer may be collaborating with prosecutors.
Ebert has remained detained at Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Maryland without bail since April. The 33-year-old previously told authorities he committed no crime. A status hearing is scheduled for September 22. Turnstile officially separated from Ebert in 2022, citing a documented pattern of harmful conduct and escalating threats of violence against band members and the community.
