Dave Marsh, a prolific rock critic and biographer who shaped music journalism for decades, has died at age 76. The influential writer, who passed away on August 14 at his Connecticut home, left an indelible mark on the industry through his work at major publications and his extensive catalog of books.
Marsh’s career began in the late 1960s at Creem Magazine in Detroit, where he helped establish an alternative voice in rock criticism before later joining Rolling Stone. His most celebrated work was his biography of Bruce Springsteen, which remains the definitive account of the musician’s formative years. Beyond his writing, Marsh authored over 25 books and co-created E Street Radio while hosting a long-running show on SiriusXM.
Jon Landau, Springsteen’s longtime manager and former Rolling Stone editor, paid tribute to his friend of five decades, describing Marsh as a “generous friend” with a combative spirit and deep compassion. Landau highlighted Marsh’s dedication to the Kristen Ann Carr Fund, a charitable organization Marsh co-founded with his wife to support cancer research and treatment following the death of her daughter in 1991. Over three decades, the fund organized benefit concerts and trained countless medical professionals.
Landau concluded his remembrance by stating that Marsh “approached 100% of his potential,” leaving everyone he encountered better for knowing him. “I will miss him for the rest of my life,” Landau wrote.
