Two accomplished actresses are joining forces for an upcoming Irish psychological thriller centered on the opera world. Jessica Reynolds, known for her roles in “Kneecap” and “A Woman of Substance,” will star alongside Oscar-nominated veteran Charlotte Rampling in “Maya Butterfly.” The film has been described by producers as blending the artistic intensity of “Tár” with the sensory depth of “Sound of Metal.”
The drama follows a soprano confronting a devastating secret: she is gradually losing her hearing just as she prepares for a groundbreaking opera production. Over the course of a crucial week, the protagonist must maintain her facade while fighting to preserve both her professional future and sense of self. The first-person narrative structure promises to immerse audiences in her internal struggle.
Irish opera director Edwina Casey is making her feature film directorial debut with the project, which is produced by Hail Mary Pictures and backed by funding from Screen Ireland and Northern Ireland Screen. Wildcard has secured distribution rights for the U.K. and Ireland. Filming is currently underway at the National Opera House locations in both Wexford and Belfast, with a theatrical release anticipated for the following year.
The production boasts an accomplished creative team, including production designer Ruta Kiskyte and cinematographer Piers McGrail. “Maya Butterfly” was previously selected for recognition at the Torino Film Lab and Venice Gap-Financing Market.
