Drummer Jay Weinberg has discussed the frustrations he experienced during a period when contractual restrictions prevented him from collaborating with other musicians. In a recent interview, Weinberg acknowledged that these limitations took an emotional toll on his creative pursuits, describing how a portion of his artistic identity “was dying” as a result of the constraints.
Since departing from his previous band in 2023, Weinberg has pursued numerous musical ventures, including work with Suicidal Tendencies, Fuming Mouth, and his own project Portraits of an Apparition. He has also released solo recordings and recently partnered with Canadian duo Softcult on a new track. However, Weinberg revealed that earlier in his career, legal obligations prevented him from releasing collaborative work, though he continued creating music privately during that time.
The drummer emphasized that the inability to share his creative output publicly created considerable frustration. Some of the material he referenced in the interview dates back more than a decade, including ideas that remained with him as he pursued other professional commitments. Weinberg stressed the importance of artistic collaboration across different musical styles and backgrounds, viewing it as essential to his creative health and professional fulfillment.
