Israeli authorities have filed charges against a settler in connection with the death of Palestinian activist Awdah Hathaleen, marking the first such indictment in over seven years. The defendant, Yinon Levi, faces reckless manslaughter charges along with counts of armed trespassing and property damage related to the July 2025 incident in the occupied West Bank.
Hathaleen, a 31-year-old educator and father of three, died during a confrontation in the village of Umm al-Khair when settlers arrived with heavy machinery to prepare land for an unauthorized settlement. Video evidence captured the shooting, which investigators have linked to Levi’s weapon. A subsequent analysis by Palestinian rights organization Al-Haq examined footage, witness accounts, and geographic data, concluding that none of those present at the scene were armed, contradicting self-defense claims.
Hathaleen had contributed to the Academy Award-winning documentary “No Other Land” and was known for supporting international activists. Levi’s legal team has dismissed the charges as unfounded and indicated plans to contest them in court. International bodies including the United Kingdom and European Union had previously imposed sanctions on Levi for violence against Palestinians, though the United States lifted comparable sanctions following the change in administration.
Rights groups characterize the indictment as exceptional within a broader pattern of limited accountability, noting that West Bank settler violence has escalated significantly, with over 1,100 Palestinians killed since October 2023.
