Chennai Super Kings faces a major coaching transition following Stephen Fleming’s departure after 18 years with the franchise. Fleming, who guided CSK to five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies, recently accepted the role of England’s Test head coach. The leadership vacancy has sparked widespread speculation about potential candidates to lead the franchise moving forward.
Former India opener K Srikkanth has publicly opposed the appointment of Eoin Morgan as Fleming’s successor, dismissing the former England white-ball captain’s credentials for the position. Srikkanth suggested Morgan’s record as KKR captain did not warrant consideration for a head coaching role and recommended he focus on commentary work instead. The veteran also cautioned against appointing Brendon McCullum, who previously led Kolkata Knight Riders to the 2021 IPL final.
Srikkanth advocated for Michael Hussey as the ideal candidate, citing Hussey’s prior experience as a batting coach at CSK. According to Srikkanth, appointing Hussey would ensure continuity and leverage his established relationship with the franchise. However, the expert emphasized that CSK must first clarify MS Dhoni’s future role with the team, as his position remains undefined following Fleming’s exit. Srikkanth believes resolving Dhoni’s status is essential before determining the franchise’s broader coaching structure.
CSK’s transition extends beyond coaching decisions. The franchise must now rebuild around captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and develop a younger player core following years of playoff misses.
