Honor has launched its Robot Phone in China, a device that integrates a motorized gimbal arm directly into the smartphone’s body. The gimbal houses the phone’s main 200-megapixel camera, which unfolds from the rear and can be controlled through the device’s software. Despite the unconventional design, early testing suggests the implementation is surprisingly functional and well-executed.
The gimbal mechanism is notably compact, with Honor claiming it represents the smallest gimbal technology ever incorporated into a phone. The device weighs 248 grams and measures 9.6mm in thickness when folded, making it bulkier than standard smartphones but comparable to existing foldable models from Samsung and Huawei. The camera remains protected within the phone’s housing when not in use, functioning as a standard main camera alongside a 200-megapixel telephoto lens and 50-megapixel ultrawide option.
When activated, the gimbal arm extends automatically and offers extensive functionality for both photography and videography. The system features three-axis movement with nearly 360 degrees of rotation and includes multiple tracking modes such as FPV, subject tracking, and stabilized video recording. Control is managed through the phone’s standard camera application, with manual adjustments available via an on-screen joystick. While the device also includes AI assistant features, the gimbal’s practical imaging capabilities appear to be the genuine standout feature.
