NASA is preparing to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, its latest flagship orbital observatory, scheduled for Sunday, August 30, at 7:26 a.m. ET from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. A SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket will carry the infrared telescope into space from Launch Complex 39A, the same launch pad that sent Apollo 11 and the first Space Shuttle missions skyward. The Roman Space Telescope represents a $4.3 billion investment in astronomical research capabilities. The infrared observatory combines the precise imaging quality of the Hubble Space Telescope with a field of view that is more than 100 times larger. This combination will enable scientists to catalog billions of galaxies, investigate dark energy and dark matter, and detect exoplanets on an unprecedented scale. Operating in infrared wavelengths invisible to human eyes, Roman will allow astronomers to observe how cosmic structures like galaxies and galaxy clusters evolve throughout time and measure the universe’s expansion rate.
NASA will provide live launch coverage beginning at 6:20 a.m. ET on NASA TV and YouTube, with simultaneous updates available on the Roman launch blog. SpaceX will also stream the event on its website and X social media platform. Members of the public can register as “virtual guests” to receive launch notifications and receive a digital passport stamp. If weather forces a delay, a backup launch window is available for Monday, August 31, at 7:22 a.m. ET. After deployment, Roman will travel to the second Lagrange point, approximately one million miles from Earth, where it will conduct a planned five-year primary science mission with a target operational lifespan of ten years.
