My Morning Jacket and Preservation Hall Jazz Band have reimagined Neil Young’s classic rock anthem “Like a Hurricane” for an upcoming tribute collection. The collaboration transforms the 1977 track through Jim James’s melancholic vocal delivery and the jazz ensemble’s brass contributions, while maintaining the song’s signature guitar work. The recording took place live at a New Orleans studio with producer Ross Hogarth.
The cover appears on “Heart of Gold: The Songs of Neil Young, Vol. 2 – Out of the Blue,” arriving alongside Volume 3 on November 6. Both albums benefit the Bridge School, a California nonprofit founded by Young and his ex-wife Pegi four decades ago to support children with speech and physical disabilities. The tribute project features contributions from an impressive roster of artists including Lucinda Williams, Ann Wilson, and Peter Frampton.
James expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, noting the group recorded the track specifically to honor the Bridge School’s mission. Modest Mouse and Califone also participated in the project, offering their interpretation of Young’s “Barstool Blues” with a synth-driven new wave aesthetic. The release follows last year’s successful initial volume, which showcased renditions from Eddie Vedder and Fiona Apple, among others. Pre-orders for both volumes are currently available.
