The Gramado Film Festival has committed to establishing a permanent young filmmaker residency program following the success of its inaugural edition, which concluded on August 19. Festival organizers announced that a second iteration will launch at the 2027 edition, with plans to integrate the initiative as an ongoing component of the event. Rosa Helena Volk, president of Gramadotur, the organization behind the festival, confirmed the expansion while emphasizing the program’s role in cultivating future cinema talent.
The first residency attracted 60 filmmakers between ages 18 and 35 from across Brazil, representing nine different states. Over a three-day period, participants engaged in intensive educational programming, attending 27 hours of masterclasses and discussions led by prominent figures from Brazil’s film industry. Topics covered distribution, production, and creative direction, with instructors including executives from major companies and accomplished directors.
Organizers indicated that the program structure may undergo refinement based on initial results. Discussions will address optimal participant numbers, whether to maintain single or multiple cohorts, and whether age requirements require adjustment. According to Volk, the residency serves as a talent pipeline, with confidence that participants will eventually showcase films at Gramado itself.
