Good Films Studios Spain is establishing itself as a long-term production hub at Ciudad de la Luz in Alicante, moving beyond the typical model of hosting individual film shoots. The company, backed by a €19.8 million investment from Spanish state fund SETT alongside private partners, plans to develop 20 international feature films over the next decade.
Producer Miriam Segal, who brings over 30 years of independent production experience, is leading the initiative. The studio is currently sharing the 197.7-acre complex with Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Tangled,” together accounting for approximately 90 percent of the facility’s occupancy. Segal’s first production, “People of the Book,” showcased the studio’s capabilities by utilizing the complex’s water tank to film sequences depicting Mediterranean crossings.
The venture represents a broader shift in Spain’s audiovisual industry toward building companies that can originate, finance and retain ownership of projects, rather than simply attracting international productions through locations and incentives. For Segal, the committed financing structure offers unprecedented advantages, including the ability to offer pay-or-play deals to actors—a benefit typically unavailable to independent producers. The partnership between SETT’s long-term strategic focus and Orogen Media’s commercial expertise aims to balance sustainability with market viability.
