Actress Gillian Anderson has revealed that Sony withdrew from distributing “The Salt Path” following a scandal that emerged last summer regarding the authenticity of the film’s source material. Anderson starred alongside Jason Isaacs in the film, which was presented as a true story based on a memoir by Ray and Moth Winn about a couple who embark on a transformative journey along England’s south coast after losing their home.
The controversy began when the U.K.’s Observer newspaper reported discrepancies in the Winns’ account, including questions about the circumstances of their home loss and doubts surrounding a terminal illness diagnosis. The authors’ names were also revealed to be pseudonymous. Anderson described the timing as particularly unfortunate, as Sony exited the distribution agreement just as the film was being prepared for U.S. release.
In an interview, Anderson expressed her disappointment about the situation, noting the team had developed a connection with the Winns during production. She acknowledged uncertainty about the degree of verification conducted before the scandal emerged. Despite Sony’s withdrawal, the film will receive a North American release through Rialto Distribution International, with the distributor emphasizing the work’s emotional resonance and universal themes.
