The Tampa Bay Rays dominated the New York Mets with a 6-2 victory on Tuesday night in St. Petersburg, Florida. The AL-leading Rays improved their division advantage to 4.5 games over the New York Yankees. Pitcher Freddy Peralta, recently acquired from the Mets in an early August trade, delivered an impressive performance against his former organization, allowing just one run over six innings while striking out seven batters with no walks.
Peralta’s early struggles gave way to dominant form as he retired 17 of his final 18 batters faced. The right-hander has now permitted only one run across his last 14 innings pitched. Supporting Peralta’s strong outing, the Rays’ offense proved equally effective. Yandy Díaz contributed a home run and a double, while Junior Caminero extended his hitting streak to 15 games with two singles. Victor Mesa Jr. collected three hits and Ryan Vilade drove in two runs as Tampa Bay’s lineup recorded multiple hits throughout the contest.
The Rays broke open the game in the sixth inning, scoring three runs off Mets starter Sean Manaea to chase him from the game. Francisco Lindor accounted for both of New York’s runs, including a leadoff home run in the first inning and a bases-loaded walk in the seventh. Despite managing to score late in the game, the Mets managed just two hits over the final eight innings as the Rays’ pitching staff combined to shut down the New York offense.
