Frank Beard, the drummer who anchored ZZ Top’s rhythmic foundation for over five decades, has passed away at age 77. Beard died in hospice care at his residence in Richmond, Texas, surrounded by family members. The passing came just days after the legendary rock band canceled an upcoming performance at the Hollywood Bowl, citing health concerns related to the longtime musician.
Beard joined ZZ Top in 1969 and remained with the group through their entire recording history, from their self-titled debut in 1971 through their final studio album in 2012. Though not an original member, he became integral to the band’s evolution from a blues-rock outfit to a synthesizer-influenced powerhouse, particularly during their massively successful 1980s era. Band founder Billy Gibbons praised Beard as a naturally talented innovator whose distinctive drumming style kept the group competitive throughout their 50-plus year career.
The Texas native was born in Frankston in 1949 and performed in various regional bands before joining ZZ Top. Despite his bandmates Gibbons and Hill becoming famous for their facial hair, Beard was known for sporting only a mustache—prompting Gibbons’ quip that “Frank’s beard is on his driver’s license.” ZZ Top achieved Rock and Roll Hall of Fame status in 2004, with their 1983 album “Eliminator” becoming a cultural phenomenon that cemented their legacy in rock history.
