Matt Suhey, a fullback who played a crucial role in the Chicago Bears’ historic Super Bowl XX victory, has passed away at 68. The Bears organization confirmed his death to the Associated Press, though specific details regarding the cause were not disclosed.
Selected by Chicago in the second round of the 1980 draft out of Penn State, Suhey became known for his work as a lead blocker for running back Walter Payton throughout most of his decade with the franchise. He played in 148 regular season games, accumulating 898 rushing attempts for 2,946 yards and 20 touchdowns, while also catching 260 passes for an additional 2,113 yards and five scores.
One of Suhey’s most memorable moments came during the Bears’ championship season, when he scored his only postseason touchdown in the dominant victory over the New England Patriots. Suhey remained loyal to Chicago throughout his professional career, never playing for any other NFL team during his 10-year tenure with the organization.
