Chris Slade, the Welsh drummer best known for his work with AC/DC, has announced his retirement from professional drumming. In a video message shared on Facebook over the weekend, the musician explained that approaching his 80th birthday and ongoing health complications prompted his decision to step away from performing.
Slade began his drumming career at age 16, working with Tom Jones and later becoming a prominent figure in rock music through collaborations with David Gilmour and AC/DC. He first joined the legendary Australian rock band in 1989, appearing on their album “The Razor’s Edge,” though he temporarily left in 1994. He rejoined the group in 2015 and remained with them until now.
In his retirement announcement, Slade revealed that a stroke he suffered approximately seven years ago has worsened over time, affecting his ability to perform at the level he desired. He expressed disappointment about not being able to continue touring into his eighties like fellow rock icons such as the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney. Despite stepping back from drumming, Slade indicated that his solo project, the Chris Slade Timeline, would remain active on social media with occasional updates for fans.
