Evan Rachel Wood has expressed disappointment over being replaced in the upcoming “Practical Magic 2” sequel, claiming that none of the original film’s cast or crew reached out to inform her of the recasting decision. Wood, who played Kylie Owens in the 1998 cult classic, shared her frustration through social media, noting that actress Joey King—who is taking over her role—was the sole person to contact her about the change.
The actor emphasized feeling saddened by missing the opportunity to reunite with her former castmates as adults and explore how their characters had evolved over time. Wood previously revealed she had offered to participate in the project in any capacity, even for a single scene or line, but was informed the production was moving forward with new casting choices. She suggested that while the sequel’s approach may not have aligned with returning cast members, the original source material could have accommodated her involvement.
Director Susanne Bier defended the recasting decision, explaining that the story required the characters to be recent college graduates, making it necessary to bring in younger actors. King spoke positively about her conversation with Wood at the film’s Los Angeles premiere, praising the original performer’s talent and gracious support. “Practical Magic 2” opens September 10 and also features “Game of Thrones” star Maisie Williams in a recast role.
