ESPN is launching a special broadcast option for the upcoming MLB Little League Classic, scheduled to air on August 23. While the main telecast will run on ESPN with traditional commentary, the network’s second channel ESPN2 will offer an alternative broadcast featuring former Little League players and alumni discussing the game from a personal perspective.
The alternative cast will include play-by-play announcer Mike Monaco alongside former Major League Baseball players Todd Frazier and Devon Travis, who will call the action from Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The Milwaukee Brewers will face the Atlanta Braves at the historic Bowman Field during this ninth annual Little League Classic, which aims to highlight the connections between professional baseball players and young athletes competing in the Little League World Series.
Special guests with Little League ties, including former pitcher Lance Lynn and hockey analyst Ray Ferraro, are scheduled to join the broadcast to share personal stories from their youth baseball experiences. Frazier won a Little League World Series championship with his New Jersey team in 1998 before his professional career, while Travis also competed in the World Series as a youth. The experimental “alumni alt-cast” represents ESPN’s latest effort to create alternative viewing experiences for its sports programming.
