More than two months into the offseason, Detroit Pistons center Jalen Duren remains unsigned as contract negotiations with the franchise have stalled. Green referenced Jonathan Kuminga’s situation with the Warriors, highlighting how organizations treat homegrown talent differently from acquired players. After the Warriors drafted Kuminga seventh overall in 2021, ownership demonstrated patience through years of inconsistent performance. However, when the Hawks acquired him via trade, they showed no such loyalty, declining his option and releasing him within months. Kuminga ultimately signed with Minnesota on a modest deal, illustrating the consequences of departing one’s original organization.
In Duren’s case, the 22-year-old has spent his entire four-year career with Detroit following his draft night trade. Last season, he delivered his strongest performance with 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, earning All-Star and All-NBA Third Team recognition. However, a poor playoff showing dampened his negotiating position. While Duren seeks over $40 million annually, Detroit offers approximately $35 million.
Green expressed optimism that both sides would eventually reach an agreement, allowing the partnership to flourish. The standoff continues, with Duren potentially considering a qualifying offer worth $9.6 million to become unrestricted free agent in 2027 if negotiations fail to produce results.
