The University of Tennessee has introduced its latest four-legged leader to the football program. Smokey XII, a 2-year-old bluetick coonhound, made his official debut at Neyland Stadium during the Volunteers’ season opener against Furman on September 5th. The young mascot ran alongside the team and through the end zone, continuing a tradition that dates back through eleven previous canine predecessors.
What makes Smokey XII unique is his background as a rescue dog, marking the first time the university has selected a rescued animal for the iconic role. The search for a new mascot began in late 2025 after Smokey XI’s retirement, which became necessary due to temperament concerns that made public appearances uncomfortable for the previous dog. The new recruit was identified through East Tennessee’s bluetick coonhound rescue community and caught the attention of veterinarian Dr. Zenithson Ng, who recognized the dog’s bold and outgoing personality during their December meeting.
Before taking the field at Neyland Stadium, Smokey XII underwent specialized training to prepare for his responsibilities as the team’s official mascot. He made his first public appearance during the Orange and White spring game earlier in the year. The dog will celebrate a ceremonial birthday alongside the university on September 10th, officially marking his place in Tennessee football history.
