Academy Award-winning actress Da’Vine Joy Randolph has joined the cast of an upcoming independent dark comedy titled “Dedicated to Morris Burke,” directed by Will Ropp. The film centers on Randolph’s character, Judy Brooks, a woman navigating unexpected complications following her husband’s death. When she encounters his final published novel, she discovers it carries a dedication to someone named Morris Burke rather than to her, breaking a lifelong pattern.
Consumed by this mystery, Judy embarks on a quest to uncover the identity of Morris Burke while grappling with her grief. Her obsession threatens to overshadow her relationships with her son Lucas and those closest to her. The project brings together an impressive ensemble cast including Kate McKinnon, Amy Sedaris, Janeane Garofalo, Alison Pill, Andrew Rannells, and Stephen McKinley Henderson, among others.
Director Ropp penned a statement about the film’s themes, explaining that it examines the delicate intersection between tragedy and humor while exploring how individuals process loss. He expressed enthusiasm about Randolph’s involvement in bringing the complex and emotionally layered character to life. Screenwriter Jeremy Leder created the script, marking Ropp’s second feature film following his directorial debut “Brian.” Production commenced in late July in New York City, with UTA Independent Film Group handling worldwide sales representation.
