Darius Garland discussed his transition to the Los Angeles Clippers in an exclusive interview at New Balance’s Beantown Elite Experience. The point guard, who departed Cleveland after more than seven years with the franchise, reflected on his first months with his new team and the challenges that defined his inaugural season in Los Angeles.
Garland emphasized his enthusiasm about playing under head coach Tyronn Lue, noting that he specifically requested a playing style reminiscent of Kyrie Irving’s approach during the 2016 Finals. The guard expressed optimism about implementing Lue’s offensive vision and credited his first full training camp and offseason with the organization for building momentum heading into the upcoming campaign.
A significant setback marked Garland’s initial year with the Clippers, as a toe injury that worsened throughout the season limited his effectiveness. What began as a bone bruise evolved into torn ligaments requiring reconstruction, forcing him to play through considerable discomfort during the latter half of the season. Despite the frustration of missing time during what he characterized as a strong period for the team, Garland reported full recovery and expressed readiness for a complete season ahead.
Beyond his professional obligations, Garland took on a mentoring role at the New Balance event, working with young prospects and sharing his basketball expertise. He characterized his addition to the brand’s roster as an honor and indicated his willingness to participate in future camps, emphasizing his commitment to serving as a positive influence for developing athletes.
