A significant financial crime has come to light involving comedian Dane Cook and his half-brother, who served as his business manager. In 2010, Darryl McCauley was convicted of embezzling $12 million from the entertainer’s accounts and ordered to repay the full amount. McCauley received a six-year prison sentence on charges including larceny, forgery, and embezzlement, while his wife Erika was sentenced to two to three years for her involvement in the scheme.
The theft involved systematic withdrawals ranging from $20,000 to $100,000 from Cook’s accounts, with McCauley storing the stolen cash in unconventional locations including hidden compartments and spaghetti sauce jars. The embezzlement remained undetected until 2008, when Cook discovered the fraudulent activity. Both brothers had initially shared aspirations of becoming stand-up comedians, though only Cook achieved major success in entertainment while McCauley worked as a corrections officer before taking control of his brother’s finances.
After completing his prison sentence, McCauley vanished without a trace. Cook has since produced a documentary titled “Funny Money: The Dane Cook Story,” which explores the family betrayal and examines the circumstances surrounding the crime. In promotional materials for the film, Cook questions whether additional stolen funds remain hidden and suggests that other individuals may possess knowledge about the missing money.
