A court panel has ruled against former Nickelodeon showrunner Dan Schneider in his appeal of a defamation lawsuit related to the documentary series “Quiet on Set.” Schneider had challenged the 2024 documentary, claiming it falsely suggested he was involved in child sexual abuse. Though he initially won a lower court ruling that allowed the case to proceed, a three-judge appellate panel unanimously sided with the documentary’s producers and distributors, including Warner Bros. Discovery and Sony.
The judges determined that while “Quiet on Set” depicted Schneider as a problematic workplace leader, the show did not cross into defamatory territory. Judge Melanie Ochoa noted that the documentary clearly distinguishes between Schneider’s misconduct—including discrimination and harassment—and the child abuse explicitly attributed to named individuals. The panel emphasized that the series also documented Nickelodeon’s investigation into Schneider, which confirmed inappropriate behavior but found no evidence of child sexual abuse.
Schneider created numerous successful Nickelodeon programs before the network terminated his contract in 2018 amid allegations of abusive conduct. The documentary, which premiered on Investigation Discovery in March 2024, prompted Schneider to post a video acknowledging embarrassment over his past behavior. His legal team expressed disappointment with the appeals court decision and stated they are considering further review options.
