Indianapolis Colts cornerback Justin Walley returned to joint practice Wednesday against the Atlanta Falcons with a memorable performance, recording a defensive touchdown after suffering a season-ending knee injury exactly one year prior. During the team’s final competitive period of the day at Grand Park, Walley read a shallow route and intercepted a pass from Falcons quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, returning it for a touchdown that energized the Colts sideline.
The play capped off a dominant defensive display for Indianapolis, which struggled early against running back Bijan Robinson but significantly improved as the practice progressed. Following Walley’s pick-six, the Colts defense recorded multiple stops, including a sack by edge rusher Arden Key and stuffed runs from linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither and defensive tackle Colby Wooden. Tagovailoa completed just 8 of 13 passes for the Falcons, with several incompletions attributed to Colts defenders.
Colts head coach Shane Steichen praised Walley’s performance, noting his ability to make plays throughout camp following his return from the torn ACL suffered during a joint practice with Baltimore the previous August. The defensive back’s touchdown reception provided a major momentum shift in an otherwise dominant showing by the Indianapolis defense during their first joint practice with Atlanta.
The Colts did suffer injury concerns, with tight end Tyler Warren dealing with a right thigh issue and running back DJ Giddens sitting out due to a recurring hamstring problem. Several other players, including cornerback Charvarius Ward and offensive tackles Luke Tenuta and Nolan Rucci, remained sidelined.
