Kanter attended Sunday’s matchup between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever as part of his broader campaign regarding transgender athletes in professional sports. The former center has declared for the WNBA Draft to draw attention to what he views as inadequate eligibility guidelines in the league’s collective bargaining agreement.
The situation escalated when Kanter engaged in a heated exchange with Sky guard Natasha Cloud during the third quarter. According to Kanter’s account, Cloud made comments about him and another player. The confrontation resulted in Kanter standing up with his arms extended, which prompted arena security to remove him from the game.
Following the incident, the Chicago Sky organization issued a ban preventing Kanter from attending their future games. However, the WNBA has not implemented a league-wide prohibition against him. Smith emphasized that the WNBA players themselves bear no responsibility for the policy debate and should not have been subjected to courtside disruption during their professional obligations.
