Filmmaker Amanda Kernell is preparing to unveil her third feature film at major international festivals this fall. The project, titled “Brace Your Heart,” will debut at both the Toronto International Film Festival and San Sebastián Film Festival, with a trailer now available exclusively.
Kernell, previously recognized for her directorial work on “Sámi Blood” and “Charter,” also wrote the screenplay for this new production. The film centers on a young woman named Ejva who suddenly inherits her father’s reindeer herd after his unexpected death. As she navigates this new responsibility, she receives support from a local community leader, though complications arise when she develops romantic feelings for his cousin.
In discussing her creative vision, Kernell emphasized her focus on depicting resilience rather than victimhood. She explained that while some people struggle to recover from trauma, others find their way through to hope and healing. The director revealed that the film’s title carries specific cultural significance within Sámi reindeer herding communities, referring to the emotional fortitude required to endure hardship. However, Kernell noted this toughness comes with a cost, particularly when it comes to matters of the heart.
The production is being distributed by TrustNordisk and features Elli Sara Valkeapää in the lead role, alongside actors Andte Gaup-Juuso and Vincent Niia. The film represents a collaboration among multiple Nordic production companies and broadcasters.
