Reddit has experienced a dramatic decline in citations from ChatGPT, dropping by more than 86 percent in just four days. According to research published by PromptWatch, Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations fell from approximately 3.83 percent to below 0.52 percent between August 14 and 17. This sudden shift marks a significant change for a platform that had been among ChatGPT’s most frequently referenced sources.
The precise cause of this decline remains unclear. While ChatGPT implemented changes to its search functionality on August 8, experts note this timing does not align with the sharp drop that occurred days later. Interestingly, this citation reduction appears isolated to ChatGPT, with other AI tools showing only minor decreases in Reddit references during the same period. A previous similar incident in September of the prior year was ultimately traced to a Google search parameter adjustment that multiple AI platforms relied upon.
Reddit’s relationship with artificial intelligence has been complex and sometimes contentious. The platform has faced growing challenges from spam and promotional tactics designed specifically to manipulate AI recommendations. However, Reddit has also profited substantially from AI development, having secured a major licensing agreement with OpenAI that provided content access for model training.
Whether this citation drop results from deliberate action by either company remains speculation. Industry observers suggest it is possible that ChatGPT’s reliance on Reddit could be restored in the near future, though the reasons for the current reduction may not be immediately apparent.
