Palestinian actor Tawfeek Barhom, recognized for his acclaimed performances in “Cairo Conspiracy” and the award-winning short film “I’m Glad You’re Dead Now,” has been cast as the lead in the upcoming French production “Borderline.” The film marks the directorial debut of Yves Piat, an Oscar-nominated filmmaker, and represents an expanded feature-length interpretation of his earlier acclaimed short work “Nefta Football Club.”
Set on the border between Algeria and Tunisia, “Borderline” follows Hichem, a customs officer attempting to maintain an honest living while supporting his family amid widespread corruption. His moral convictions are tested when he encounters an unexpected discovery: a donkey lost in the desert carrying cocaine and wearing headphones. The narrative explores themes of personal integrity and the absurdity of borders, blending dramatic and comedic elements inspired by the cinematic styles of notable filmmakers.
The international co-production brings together French production company Les Valseurs with Spanish partners Sumendi and BTeam, alongside funding from multiple European sources. The project is scheduled to begin filming in spring 2027 and will be presented at the Nordic Co-Production Market in Haugesund. Additional cast members include Samir Guesmi and Lyes Salem, who previously appeared in “Nefta Football Club.”
