Jay Huff enters his sixth NBA season in unfamiliar territory: stability. The center, who spent his first four professional years bouncing between five different teams on various two-way contracts, will remain with the Indiana Pacers for consecutive seasons. After being traded to Indiana from Memphis last summer, Huff triggered a fully guaranteed contract for the 2027-28 season by meeting certain playing time thresholds during the 2025-26 campaign.
The 28-year-old made the most of his first year with the Pacers, appearing in all 82 games while averaging 9.5 points and 4.0 rebounds. However, his offensive efficiency dipped compared to previous seasons, and his three-point percentage fell from over 40 percent to 31.9 percent. His defensive presence remained strong, with shot-blocking numbers rivaling those of Victor Wembanyama. Huff spent his offseason training in Los Angeles with teammates, visiting a player development facility in Spain, and working to add muscle—gaining between 10 and 15 pounds.
The added bulk aims to support his role as backup center behind starter Ivica Zubac. More importantly, Huff’s offseason included on-court development with star point guard Tyrese Haliburton, who missed the entire 2025-26 season. Building chemistry with Haliburton before the campaign begins could prove crucial for Huff’s integration into Indiana’s system and overall productivity during year two.
As the Pacers attempt to recover from a 19-win season, a more efficient and physically imposing Huff could significantly contribute to their turnaround efforts.
