The United Kingdom’s television production sector generated £3.81 billion ($5.1 billion) in revenue during the previous year, marking a significant uptick in financial performance. According to data released by Pact, the industry trade organization representing independent producers, this figure represents a £149 million increase from the prior year, reflecting a 4.1% growth trajectory. The expansion has been substantially fueled by investment from American streaming platforms seeking to develop content within the country.
International television revenue constituted a notable 41.1% of total sector earnings, reaching £1.57 billion and demonstrating a remarkable 15.8% year-on-year increase. This growth milestone marks the first substantial expansion in this revenue category since the industry’s post-pandemic recovery period in 2022. Major streaming services including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have substantially increased their commissioning budgets directed toward British productions.
However, the sector faces some headwinds domestically. Revenue from United Kingdom-focused television programming declined below the £2 billion threshold for the first time in five years, experiencing a 4.7% contraction. This decline stems from reduced commissioning activity from traditional public service broadcasters and multichannel operators. Despite these challenges, production companies are adapting by diversifying income sources, with secondary rights revenue climbing 12.7% to reach record levels and non-television revenue expanding through feature film production and event work.
