Atlanta Braves right-hander Grant Holmes made a strong bid for baseball history Thursday in Chicago, maintaining a no-hitter through six innings against the White Sox in a makeup game at Rate Field. The Braves held a 2-0 lead heading into the seventh inning of the rescheduled contest, originally postponed due to rain on June 11.
The 30-year-old Holmes demonstrated impressive control throughout his outing, retiring 18 of the first 20 Chicago batters he faced. The White Sox managed only two baserunners on walks: Colson Montgomery drew a free pass in the second inning, and Drew Romo reached base on a walk in the fifth. Otherwise, Holmes kept the home team completely off the basepaths.
Holmes’ near-perfect performance added to a notable season for no-hitters in Major League Baseball. Earlier this year, three Houston pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter against Texas on May 25. The Braves’ organization last witnessed a no-hitter in 1994, when Kent Mercker blanked the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-0 on April 8.
The right-hander has never completed a full nine-inning game in his major league career. His previous longest outing spanned 7 2/3 innings on April 14, 2025, during a victory over Toronto. Holmes began his professional baseball journey after spending a decade in the minor leagues before joining the Braves in June 2024.
