Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield will take the field during the team’s second preseason contest this summer, marking a shift in approach from last year. Head coach Todd Bowles announced Monday that Mayfield is scheduled to play against the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday evening.
The decision represents a change in strategy for the organization. During the 2025 preseason, Mayfield did not appear in any games. This time around, Bowles indicated that other available starters will also participate in the matchup with Kansas City. The Bucs sat out their primary roster in Friday’s preseason opener against the Jets.
Mayfield enters the final season of his current contract with the franchise. Throughout the offseason, he pursued a contract extension, though negotiations have not resulted in an agreement thus far. Despite the ongoing contractual discussions, he has remained active at training camp throughout the summer.
