Kino Lorber has unveiled the inaugural trailer for director Reed Van Dyk’s “Atonement,” a war drama set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before its October 2 theatrical release. The film features Kenneth Branagh, Boyd Holbrook, and Hiam Abbass in leading roles, tackling themes of military conflict, personal responsibility, and the possibility of forgiveness.
The narrative centers on the Khachaturian family, whose lives are upended when U.S. military operations force them to flee their Baghdad home during the Iraq War. After seeking shelter with relatives, the family attempts to return across the war-torn city but becomes caught in crossfire between American Marines and opposing forces. A Marine’s instantaneous decision in that moment leaves lasting scars on the family and sets the stage for decades of trauma.
Years after these devastating events, the Marine, portrayed by Holbrook, works alongside a journalist inspired by real New Yorker correspondent Dexter Filkins to seek reconciliation with the surviving family members. The film explores profound questions about guilt, redemption, and whether forgiveness is possible after tragedy. Van Dyk drew inspiration from a 2012 New Yorker article documenting an actual meeting between a soldier and the family affected by his unit’s actions.
The cast has praised the production for its thoughtful examination of war’s human cost. Abbass, who plays family matriarch Mariam, emphasized how the story demonstrates compassion transcending conflict, while Branagh highlighted the film’s respectful approach to its challenging subject matter.
