A significant overnight attack on Kyiv has resulted in at least 13 deaths and 40 injuries, according to Ukraine’s prime minister. The strikes targeted residential buildings and storage facilities across the capital, with a children’s hospital and school also sustaining damage. Officials characterize the assault as a large-scale operation that struck multiple districts throughout the city.
Ukrainian leadership has attributed the casualties directly to insufficient air defence capabilities. President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that the nation’s reliance on Western-supplied missile interceptors leaves the population vulnerable to Russian ballistic attacks. Mayor Vitali Klitschko and other officials have called urgently for increased support from international partners, particularly additional anti-missile systems and ammunition needed to defend against such assaults.
The overnight bombardment employed approximately 20 Russian missiles and numerous drones, with Ukrainian air defences managing to intercept some weapons but failing to stop ballistic missiles entirely. The strikes caused widespread power outages across the region, leaving thousands without electricity. The incident marks the latest in a series of escalating aerial attacks between both nations, highlighting the ongoing toll of the conflict on Ukraine’s civilian population and infrastructure.
