Apple unveiled iOS 27 at its September 9 “Surprise and Shine” event, alongside new hardware including the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, foldable iPhone Duo, updated Apple Watches, and AirPods 5. The highly anticipated operating system will become available for download beginning Monday, September 14, with installation typically starting at 10:00 a.m. PT or 1:00 p.m. ET.
The latest iOS iteration introduces significant artificial intelligence capabilities, most notably an enhanced Siri that functions similarly to modern AI chatbots and leverages Google Gemini technology. Additional features include advanced photo-editing tools powered by Apple Intelligence, such as spatial reframing, which enables users to remove unwanted elements or describe desired modifications through voice or text commands. The update also brings refinements to Liquid Glass customization and minor improvements across Health, Photos, and Notes applications.
To install iOS 27, users should navigate to Settings, select General, then Software Update. Alternatively, enabling Automatic Updates allows the system to download the software automatically when the device is charging and locked. A wide range of iPhones support the update, from the iPhone SE (second generation or later) through the newest iPhone 18 Pro Max, as well as the iPhone Duo. However, European users will not receive Siri AI capabilities due to regulatory restrictions in that region.
