EVA AI, a developer of artificial intelligence companion applications, has announced it is recruiting licensed human therapists to support users navigating romantic relationships with AI bots. The position, titled “AI companionship therapist,” would focus on helping individuals process their experiences with AI partners.
According to an internal survey of 1,000 adults in AI relationships, the demand for specialized mental health support is significant. Approximately 68 percent of respondents reported concealing their AI relationships due to social stigma, while 72 percent indicated they would benefit from therapists trained in this emerging field. Company leadership chose to hire human professionals rather than develop an AI-based therapeutic tool, citing the need for clinical judgment and ethical accountability that only licensed practitioners can provide.
Professional perspectives on AI companion relationships remain divided. Some mental health experts have raised concerns about potential negative outcomes including diminished social skills and unhealthy behavioral patterns. Others suggest these relationships can offer benefits for individuals seeking emotional validation and communication practice, though some compare them to temporary training tools rather than permanent solutions. EVA AI’s resident therapist emphasized that the platform implements safeguards to support mental health rather than undermine it.
