Auburn football opened its 2026 season with a narrow 17-16 victory over Baylor on Saturday, and head coach Alex Golesh indicated the team should avoid significant long-term health complications from the contest. Despite several players experiencing injury-related issues during the matchup, Golesh expressed optimism about the overall condition of his roster moving forward.
The Tigers encountered multiple injury concerns throughout the game, particularly along their defensive line. Edge rushers Da’Shawn Womack and Jared Smith both sustained injuries during play, though Golesh noted they were prepared to return if necessary. Smith did re-enter the game, while Golesh indicated Womack stood ready to contribute had he been needed in the remaining moments.
Auburn’s offensive line also faced disruptions late in the fourth quarter when starting guards Cole Skinner and Jacob Strand went down near the conclusion of a crucial scoring drive. However, Golesh stated both players were capable of returning to action if the situation demanded their presence. Edge rusher CK Murray also potentially sustained minor injuries during the physical contest.
Golesh characterized the encounter as an intense, hard-hitting matchup and acknowledged his players would likely experience some soreness. Nevertheless, he expressed confidence that Auburn would recover adequately and maintain roster health heading into upcoming contests, attributing the team’s preparedness to contingency planning implemented throughout the tightly contested affair.
