Two artificial intelligence music platforms have secured licensing agreements for a substantial patent portfolio developed through a partnership between Universal Music Group and intellectual property firm Liquidax. Music IP Holdings, established last year, has made over 24 patents available to Udio and GRAI, marking the first companies to license the collection. The patents address critical aspects of AI music development, including content moderation, watermarking, licensed distribution channels, and compensation mechanisms.
The patent portfolio is designed to establish standards for creating, tracking, and monetizing AI-generated music while simultaneously protecting artists and rights holders. According to Music IP Holdings leadership, the framework aims to balance innovation with responsibility, ensuring that creators maintain agency and receive proper compensation when their work is used in AI applications. The scope extends beyond music to encompass other AI-derived content, including video and voice materials.
Both Udio and GRAI emphasized their commitment to ethical AI practices through their licensing decisions. Udio’s CEO highlighted the importance of building infrastructure that protects artists, while GRAI’s leadership outlined plans to implement systems where artists are credited and compensated each time their work is incorporated into new creations. Universal Music Group framed the initiative as central to developing an AI ecosystem that prioritizes creator interests and establishes guardrails for responsible technological advancement.
