The latest installment of the “Insidious” franchise might never have reached audiences without the determination of its veteran star Lin Shaye. A sixth film in the horror series was initially in development at Sony, but internal changes resulted in the project being abandoned. Shaye’s response was to take matters into her own hands, reaching out directly to Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman and CEO Tom Rothman with a personal appeal to reconsider the cancellation.
Shaye, who shares a history with Rothman from their work together on a 1998 film, penned a letter advocating for the project’s revival. Rather than focusing solely on her own interests, the 82-year-old actress emphasized the dedication of the franchise’s devoted fanbase. Her unconventional advocacy strategy proved effective, as Rothman greenlit the production. “Insidious: Out of the Further,” directed by James Chase, subsequently debuted at the box office with a $25.3 million opening against an $18 million budget.
For Shaye, the moment represented a breakthrough in her extensive five-decade career. She reflected on how her intervention challenged a longstanding sense of powerlessness she had experienced in the entertainment industry as a woman. The actress credited her mother’s example of speaking up for herself as inspiration for taking action. Shaye emphasized the significance of using one’s voice, saying that advocacy should never cease.
The franchise, which launched in 2010, has generated $800 million worldwide across its five previous installments. Shaye’s character, psychic Elise Rainer, remains central to the series’ appeal despite her character’s death early in the saga, with the new film exploring themes of motherhood and intergenerational trauma.
