Legendary defensive lineman Aaron Donald is expressing optimism about his physical conditioning following his return to the Los Angeles Rams after a two-year absence from professional football. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year, who last played in January 2024, rejoined the team approximately one month ago and has been impressed with his body’s response to training.
Donald remains noncommittal regarding his availability for the Rams’ season opener against the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia, stating the team is evaluating his status on a daily basis. He sat out Monday’s practice as part of a scheduled rest day, a recovery strategy frequently employed during his previous tenure with the franchise. At 35 years old, Donald acknowledged some initial rust during his first 11-on-11 drills but expressed confidence in his overall readiness, noting minimal decline despite the extended layoff.
Defensive coordinator Chris Shula emphasized the value of incorporating Donald’s elite skill set while remaining flexible about his participation level. Rather than operating as a full-time player, Donald is expected to focus selectively on pass-rushing opportunities alongside newly acquired Myles Garrett. The Rams possess sufficient depth at interior lineman positions, including Kobie Turner, Poona Ford, and Braden Fiske, allowing Donald to manage his workload strategically.
Donald expressed appreciation for this arrangement, highlighting the freedom it provides to perform at his highest level without excessive snap demands. He characterized his return as surprisingly positive and indicated he remains committed to maintaining his historically high performance standards.
