As Labor Day Weekend concludes the summer theatrical season, streaming platforms are preparing to capitalize on some of cinema’s biggest recent releases. The summer proved exceptionally strong at the box office, driven by major productions like “The Odyssey” and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” but September marks when audiences can access these films from home.
Several standout titles are arriving on streaming services this month. Disney+ will host “Toy Story 5,” the year’s third highest-grossing film with $1.13 billion in worldwide earnings. Meanwhile, A24’s horror sensation “Backrooms” is heading to HBO Max after becoming the studio’s most successful release ever. The “Star Wars” film “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” which underperformed during its theatrical run with $345 million globally, now has an opportunity to find a larger audience on Disney+. Paramount+ is also releasing “Scary Movie 6,” which earned $231 million worldwide and features returning cast members from the beloved franchise.
Beyond these major releases, HBO Max will premiere “Supergirl” on September 10, featuring an adaptation of the DC Comics series “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” The platform will also offer an American Sign Language version of the film to enhance accessibility for diverse audiences.
