YouTube and Variety are partnering to launch an inaugural creator festival at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10. The event will showcase two new series from prominent content creators, marking a significant moment for both the creator economy and the film festival.
The festival will feature world premieres of works from YouTube creators Mark Vins and Ziwe. Vins, known for his Brave Wilderness channel, will present a feature-length documentary titled “Reef to Ridge,” which documents an expedition through the Galápagos Islands to film endangered species. Ziwe will screen two episodes from her acclaimed series “You’d Be an Iconic Guest.” Following each screening, Variety’s executive film editor will conduct interviews with the creators.
The collaboration reflects YouTube’s expanding role in entertainment and film production. Both shows will move exclusively to YouTube later in the year. According to YouTube’s global head of creators Kim Larson, the partnership demonstrates that content creators are not merely participating in entertainment’s future but actively shaping it. Variety executives similarly emphasized the significance of spotlighting creator-filmmakers who are elevating storytelling standards and establishing themselves as influential voices in cinema.
