The Game Band, the studio behind the viral baseball simulator Blaseball, is launching a new daily word puzzle game called Dartwords. Creative director Sam Rosenthal, who regularly plays Wordle, drew inspiration from casual word games played during childhood road trips—games that couldn’t exist in digital form until now. He wanted to create something more conversational than existing daily puzzlers.
Dartwords tasks players with guessing a secret word within ten attempts. Rather than providing traditional hints, an AI-powered character named Darty responds to each guess with contextual clues. The game uses a custom hint engine built on a local language model trained on the English dictionary, combined with developer-written hints as players get closer to the answer. A visual dartboard on screen tracks progress toward the correct solution.
The game’s open-ended format requires strategic thinking about which words to guess to receive useful clues. Rosenthal notes that the studio hand-crafted all artwork and user interface elements, while using AI tools to assist with coding tasks. He expressed optimism that the hint system will improve as more players engage with the game and provide feedback on their experiences.
Dartwords represents the latest addition to The Game Band’s diverse portfolio, following narrative puzzle game Where Cards Fall and Netflix’s party game Dead Man’s Party.
